As a boss, you probably want to remain somewhat aloof and distant from your employees. A little bit of distance is always good, since it can lead to your employees getting too relaxed and comfortable around you, which can lead to laziness. That is never something you want to deal with in an employee, so you need to be careful of that. However, being too distant and intimidating can backfire on you. You may think that this attitude is an incentive to make your employees work harder, but it can actually lead to them resenting you and fearing you. This is never good thing, and you definitely want to be careful of this. Being intimidating and unapproachable is not the same as being distant. You should always make sure the your employees know that they can come and talk to you about any issues. This will result in employees who work harder for you.

Giving your employees more breaks is definitely good way to increase their productivity and make sure that they work harder. However, giving them more breaks that happen to be shorter than the ones they originally had is just asking for trouble. Shorter breaks may seem like a good idea to you because it means they will get back to work more quickly, but this is just going to irritate your employees. It can be a good idea to give your employees more breaks, but only if you are willing to follow through with giving them extra time off.

4. A Raise – but Only under Specific Circumstances

Obviously, every employee dreams about getting a raise. However, if you are only teasing them with the idea of a raise and not actually going to give it to them unless they meet extremely specific circumstances, you’re just setting yourself up for failure. Dangling a carrot like this rarely works, and instead is just going to make your employees resent you. This is obviously not something that you want to do, because it can easily lead to strife. You don’t want to in your workplace, so only offer a raise unless you are really willing to give it to someone. Don’t dangle that carrot.
